The Real Risks of Hanging Art with 3M Tape

Removable adhesive strips (like 3M Command) are a renter’s best friend — but most failures come from a handful of avoidable mistakes. Here’s what to watch for.

Weight is the #1 killer

Strips are rated for a specific weight — and a framed print with glass is far heavier than it looks. Always weigh (or over-estimate) your frame and use strips rated well above it. When in doubt, use more strips or a nail.

Heat & humidity release the glue

• Avoid bathrooms, above stoves, and sunny walls that get hot — the adhesive softens and lets go.
• Give strips the full cure time (often ~1 hour) before hanging anything on them.
• Press hard for 30 seconds — poor contact is why most strips fail early.

The paint-peel trap

On freshly painted walls (under ~3–4 weeks cured), or over cheap/flaky paint, removing strips can pull the paint off. Test on an inconspicuous spot, and always remove by stretching the tab straight down slowly, never yanking outward.
