Scented Candles

A scented candle earns its place twice. Unlit, it is an object on a shelf for weeks at a time, which is why the vessel and what sits on top of the wax matter as much as the fragrance. Lit, it is the only moving light in the house.

Every candle in this range is hand-poured into a clear glass cylinder, so you see the wax rather than a printed tin, with a single central wick and a small gold emblem on the front. The surface is finished with real preserved botanicals — dried blossoms, textured clusters, sprigs and green foliage arranged in a ring around the wick. They are actual dried flowers, not printed or moulded decoration, so no two tops are quite identical.

The fragrances

The six pours here are deliberately spread across different registers rather than being six variations on one idea:

• Fig and Cranberry — the deepest of them; fruit over something resinous, and the one that

suits a cool evening and a large room.

• French Rose and Amber — floral but not sweet, with the amber keeping it grounded.
• Champagne Brunch Bloom — light, bright and a little effervescent; a morning scent.
• Tropical Orchard and Lily — orchard fruit with white florals over it.
• Pandora Lychee — the freshest and cleanest, and the easiest to live with in a small space.
• Botanical Wreath — offered across five signature fragrances, so it is the one to choose when

you want the look first and the scent second.

Soy, beeswax and how a candle actually burns

These are soy and beeswax pours rather than paraffin. In practice that means a lower, slower burn and a scent that builds through a room instead of arriving all at once — which is why a soy candle can seem faint in the first ten minutes and exactly right in the first hour.

Two habits get much more out of any poured candle. Let the melt pool reach the full width of the glass the first time you light it, because that first burn sets the shape of every one after it — cut it short and the candle will tunnel down the middle and waste the outer wax for the rest of its life. And keep the wick trimmed short; a long wick burns hot, sooty and fast, and a hot flame near dried botanicals is worth avoiding for its own sake.

Where to put them

A candle wants to be at or below eye level and out of a draught. A moving flame looks pretty and burns badly — it consumes wax unevenly, throws less scent and marks the glass. Enclosed rooms carry fragrance easily and need less than people expect; open-plan spaces need the candle near where people sit rather than at the geometric centre of the room.

Because the vessel is glass and warms as it burns, give it a coaster, tray or a stone or timber surface rather than anything polished or painted.
