Picture-Hanging Hardware Explained

The right hardware is the difference between art that hangs level for years and a frame that slowly tilts — or falls. Here’s the toolkit, plain-English.
On the frame
- Sawtooth hanger — small, for lightweight frames; quick but can drift off-level.
- D-rings (one each side) — more stable; pair with wire or hang on two hooks for heavier frames.
- Hanging wire — strung between D-rings; flexible but the frame can swing, so use two points for big pieces.
On the wall
- Picture hooks — angled brad hooks hold more than a plain nail (see our angled-nail guide).
- Wall anchors / plugs — for heavier frames on plasterboard where there’s no stud.
- French cleat — two interlocking rails; the gold standard for heavy or large pieces.
Tip: Match the hardware’s rated weight to your frame plus glass — glass is heavier than people expect.
