How High Should You Hang Wall Art?

Art hung too high is the most common styling slip — and the easiest to fix once you know the numbers.

The 145cm rule

Galleries hang art so its centre sits about 145cm (57 inches) from the floor — average eye level. Use this for any wall with no furniture beneath it (hallways, stairwells, entryways).

Above furniture

• Leave a 15–25cm gap between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame.
• For sofas and beds, the art should relate to the furniture, not float near the ceiling.
• For a gallery wall, treat the whole cluster as one piece and centre *that* at 145cm.

The quick maths

1. 1Find the centre height you want (145cm, or ~10cm above furniture).
2. 2Measure your frame height and halve it.
3. 3Add that half to the centre height — that’s where the *top* of the frame goes.
4. 4Measure the hanging hardware’s drop from the top, and mark your hook below the top line by that amount.
