What’s Inside a Crystal Porcelain Print? The 5 Layers Explained

Crystal porcelain (sometimes called “crystal board”) gets its signature glass-like depth and colour from how it’s built — not one print, but a stack of purpose-made layers pressed together. Here’s what’s actually inside one.

The five layers, front to back

1. 1Diamond crystal face — a clear, hard-coated top layer that seals the art. It’s scratch- and moisture-resistant and gives that deep, glossy “under glass” shine.
2. 2Plexiglass mirror layer — a reflective sub-layer that bounces light back through the print, adding luminosity and a sense of depth you can’t get from a flat print.
3. 3HD print — the artwork itself, printed at high resolution with rich, saturated colour, sandwiched so it’s fully protected.
4. 4MDF backplane — a rigid engineered-wood backing that keeps the whole panel dead-flat and stable, so it won’t warp or ripple over time.
5. 5Aluminium alloy frame — a slim, lightweight metal surround that finishes the edge and makes the piece easy to hang.

Why the layering matters

• Depth and glow — the crystal face plus the mirror layer create a three-dimensional, backlit-looking quality.
• Vivid, lasting colour — the print is sealed away from air, dust and moisture, so colours stay bright.
• Rigid and durable — the MDF core and metal frame make it far tougher than a paper poster or stretched canvas.
• Easy to clean — the sealed crystal surface just needs a soft, slightly damp wipe.
