Deer Wall Art

The deer is the calmest animal subject available, and it is a genuinely different proposition from the rest of the wildlife collection. A peacock is display, a horse is motion, a lion is authority. A deer is attention — usually standing still, usually looking, usually about to leave. The whole visual language of the subject is about alertness rather than action.

What artists do with the antlers

Antlers are the reason deer art is so often slightly unreal. They are a branching structure with no other equivalent in nature, and they invite ornament: rendered as feathers, as gold filigree, as geometry, as bare winter trees. Almost every deer piece here does something with them that a naturalist would not recognise.

Bedrooms, nurseries, reading corners, and any room where you want an animal without the animal dominating. A deer will not shout at you across a room, which is why it survives in spaces a peacock would overwhelm.

They also suit cooler palettes and cooler rooms than most wildlife art — greys, sage, pale timber, linen.

Scale and pairing

Medium works. Deer pieces are usually vertical, so they suit narrow walls, alcoves and the space beside a doorway.
